Okay, I've collected my 100 NO's, now what?

We've heard it over and over again - "Go for No's!"  The presentation at conference was motivating, our manager's incentives got us going for 100 and we did so, and with a few of those surprising and uplifting "yes" answers along the way.  This marketing strategy is a numbers game. What continues to motivate us is the realization we only need a small number to get started out of the 100 people to get things started. So we continue ignoring the no responses to get to the few “yes tell me more” responses. After wading through our 100 phone numbers we have a few parties set up. But are we going to stop at just our few family and friend to keep this business successful?  Absolutely not!   If we utilize the "Go for No" as our primary marketing strategy, this business will die out and you will not being achieving your dreams through lia sophia as I shared with you when you signed up?  So what more can you do when your call list has ran dry?

Diversify!
Have you ever had a consultation with a financial advisor? When my advisor started spewing out terms such as stocks, bonds, markets, capital, trusts, and so on, the only comprehension I had was the fact I was glad he was handling this for me and I didn't need to fully understand the market to be able to save for retirement.  But, the one concept he did share that stuck in this cobweb of a brain of mine is DIVERSIFY!  Oh, I know diversify all so well!  Now, he of course meant it to mean limiting investment risk by purchasing different types of securities from different companies representing different sectors of the economy. But I can't help think o the line from the Chappell Show, "If you're tryin to get in the biz you gonna have to diversify your bonds son."  Essentially, diversification means don't put all of your eggs in one basket.  You need a few different sources of referrals and ways to get your name and business out there for your customer base to know you.  Not every marketing tool will be a home-run, but you may get a bite here and there from across various marketing avenues that will eventually add up to a busy calendar.

Don't jump down the rabbit hole looking for an easy way out!
Don't be like Alice and fall victim to the dream that you can chase this business by a simple one step leap of faith.  There are several direct sales marketing gimmicks out there, especially on the internet, that will make promises of auto-generated lists and marketing tools that are scams.

They may look like the following:
  • “We’ll Submit Your Website to Hundreds of Search Engines!”
  • “Get #1 Ranking in Google!”
  • “We Will Submit Your Website to Over 1,000 Directories!”
  • Banner Exchange Programs
  • “Send An Email Ad to 10,000 Opt-In Subscribers”
Our experience is that many of the promises about Internet marketing today are based on what we call the "Aladdin's Lamp Theory of Internet Marketing." You know, you make three wishes, rub the lamp, and then you expect them to instantly come true.First of all, these don't work!  Second, most of which are violations of our lia sophia contract and we risk losing this great opportunity so it's not worth it.  Third, they don't work!  Wait, did I say that already? Well, let me say it again... THEY DON'T WORK!  So don't even bother.

So then, what does work?

The best way to find new leads and keep your business growing is by implementing simple, cost effective, ways to get your name out there in your local community, so that you become known as THE lia sophia lady in town.
  • The best and most effective way to bring in new shows is by being the best lia sophia adivsor to your current customers and hostesses!  Keep up on your customer's needs.  Have fun at your parties, and encourage bookings at each show.  Even if someone doesn't book that night, you will be planting a seed within them that may grow into a future booking.
  • Give Referral Bonuses.  When holding a party or show, tell customers that when they supply three names of people who actually become customers, they will receive a fixed amount of free product or a dollar amount gift certificate. Referrals can make your direct selling profits soar, if handled correctly. A customer will only supply referrals if they truly trust you and like your product. When you receive these leads, make sure to deliver impeccable customer service to reinforce the relationship of trust.
  • Use your expired catalogs.  Print up some stickers with your contact information, including email and website, that say “Contact Me for a Current Catalog!” Put one on each expired catalog before you begin to distribute them.
    • Leave them on a table in your local library. Our library actually has a box set aside for people to drop off used magazines and books. I’ve picked up catalogs for several direct sales companies there.
    • Drop them off at local doctors, dentists, chiropractors and other offices where people have to wait.
    • Leave one in the dressing room when you try on a new outfit.
    • Cut a circle of netting or sheer fabric (or buy circles ready-made at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby). Place 4-5 Hershey’s Kisses® in the center of the circle and tie with ribbon. Attach one to each expired catalog and drop them off around town in any office that has a receptionist. Consider car dealerships, insurance offices, contractors, etc.
    • Ask if you can drop off a few at your child’s day care center.
    • Leave a few in the restaurant’s restroom when you go out to eat, and leave one on the table with your (generous) tip.
    • Give one to your bank teller when you go through the drive-through.

    • Take a couple with you when you have your nails done.
    • Ask your hairstylist if you can leave a few in her shop. Offer her a discount for any orders that come from there.
    • Drop one off with the secretaries at your local elementary, middle and high schools.
    • Leave several around your local college campus. You can also add a recruiting sticker to these since college kids are always looking for ways to make a little money.
    • Leave a few in your local laundromat.
  • Help a Nonprofit Organization. When you hear of your favorite nonprofit holding a future fundraiser, talk to the organizer and arrange to have a table of your products set up at the event. You can donate a percent of profits to the cause. While you won’t personally make money at the event, your presence will make people aware of your business and the quality items you have to offer as well as your philanthropic commitment to the cause
  • Donate a Prize Keep yourself updated on local fundraisers and networking events. Many of these events host silent auctions or raffles where local businesses donate items for the fundraiser. Donate one of your nicer pieces for the auction or raffle. Your business name and card will accompany any raffle or auction piece. Often, these donations are tax deductible when made to a nonprofit business, but check with your certified public accountant first.
  • Social Media.  Use Facebook, twitter, blogs, etc. to keep your customers updated on lia sophia discounts, hostess incentives, and recruiting.  Be sure to visit the lia sophia University to read the policy about Facebook rules though!  Remember, you are representing YOURSELF, not lia sophia directly, upload your own snapped photos, not any from lia sophia's website or catalog, and do not make false claims.
  • Advertise.  Advertising is a slippery slope.  First of all, utilized the pre-approved advertisements at lia sophia University, and be sure not to violate lia sophia's copywrite rules.  (Simply, do not use the lia sophia logo or tag line, and you're good to go).  Advertising can be effective, but it can also be costly, so do your homework.  Find local and inexpensive ways to advertise such as via school programs, yearbooks, church directories, sporting events. Remember your target audience, and keep your message simple, catchy, and relevant.
  • Giveaways.  I hand out candies at the local Halloween Kiddie Parade. This is a great opportunity to get my name out there to the moms, but also get leads at the event.  I have my show display set up on my table, along with hundreds of mini-catalogs with my contact information that I give to each of the moms who come by.  But, I also have a drawing for a FREE $100 jewelry item that the ladies walking by sign up for. This way, I have their contact information to add to my mailing list!  This similar approach can be integrated into a PTO fundraiser, small craft show (be careful of paying $$$ to have a table set up, go for smaller venues that are free or very little cost), or fundraiser event.
So, there are some ideas to help you start diversifying your marketing approach to help generate new leads when you feel like your inner circle has ran dry.  Remember, keep positive and stick with it, and this business can do amazing things!  But, it will not do it for you.  YOU need to work your business. IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT!  So, as the new year is approaching, think of ways you can diversify your marketing approach to get your business generating leads and your calendar filling up!

Using Humor during show presentations

I love to use jokes and humor at my shows.
Many times people go to direct sales parties and expect a bit of a heavy handed sales pitch. Keep it light and fun. Jokes, where appropriate, and games are a great way to lighten the mood and let people know they’re not going to be tackled on their way out the door if they decide not to buy anything.

Humor has a huge impact on my shows for the following reasons:
  • It helps me to relax and have fun with my "job".
    • Getting up in front of a group can be nerve racking.
    • Laughing will help you to de-stress even on the most tense of days.
    • When I can relax, it helps my presentation go so much better.
    • I enjoy when I do more as well!
    • If I look like I'm having fun, then my guests will be more willing to try the business for themselves as well.
  • Humor gets my customer's attention so they're listening.
    • Jokes and humour will create a really fantastic sense of calm and ease when you are speaking to potential customers.
    • Humor operates on an emotional level, driving home my message in a far more memorable way than words alone.
    • Humor makes sensitive topics more approachable when summarizing and reinforcing points that would otherwise be lost.
  • Laughter promotes bookings!
    • When people are laughing, they are having a good time.
    • When guests have a good time at another person's show, they are more willing to book for their show.
So, that being said... here are some of my favorite jokes/humor that I use at my shows and you are more than welcome to mimic at your shows too!  Also, please feel free to add your own jokes in the comments section!  I need some new material!!!

My husband decided to buy me a mood ring so he could try to predict and avoid my perimenopausal mood swings.
He discovered that when I'm happy, the stone turns a beautiful bright blue but when I'm not, it leaves a bright red mark on his forehead! Maybe the next time he'll buy me lia sophia jewelry!

You should never leave the house without a great pair of earrings.
The reason behind this is because when you are wearing earrings,
people will look at you in the face when you're talking.
And remember ladies, when they are looking in your eyes,
they are not looking at your thighs!!!

I accept check, cash,  credit cards, and the HPP.  What's the HPP?
It's the Husband Protection Plan!  Pay a little cash, a little check, and a little on the card and it's less traceable that way!

Building your business on a budget

Lynsey Jones, The Party Plan Coach, has a blog at www.PartyPlanDivas.com, that offers online training community for the Home Party Plan Professional.  I am an avid reader of her blog, and I'd like to share with you a great post she did about buiding up your businesses without emptying out your bank account.  Many of the tools and tricks she gives are things that I am already utilizing with my lia sophia business, so I definitely want to share these pointers with my team as well!

Lynsey's entire blog post can be found here, but here are some highlights:

Building your lia sophia DOES NOT have to be an expensive endeavor!  Here are some great tips for sharing your business with others that does not break the bank:
  1. Customer Care - First and foremost always remember that we are all in the RELATIONSHIP business – the better the relationship you have with your customers, the better your business will be.  Customer Care is an absolutely FREE way to build your business in huge ways.  Keep in close contact with all of your customers, hostesses, and prospects.  Emails, phone calls, and text messages are all ways to keep in touch with your customers on a regular basis and keep them coming back time and time again.
  2. Referrals - Make it a habit of asking the five magic words – “Who do you know who…” Referrals are an incredible way to build your business with no expense.  You can literally ask every single person you know or come into contact with the five magic words– “Who do you know who…. would be interested in earning some free jewelry this month?”  “Who do you know who … would like to make some extra money this summer?”  “Who do you know who is in need of a fun Girls Night In?” By asking “Who do you know who” – you are asking for a NAME, not a “yes” or “no.”  You can make the Five Magic Words work for you in any situation and get the results you want – a REFERRAL!
  3. Take Advantage of Free Advertising Outlets - Have you ever been in a store and saw a Community Board or Bulletin Board?  Many stores have a local “What’s Happening” cork board somewhere – even if it is in the Employee Break Room.   Take advantage of these boards by putting up Tear Tab Flyers, Business Cards, Postcards, etc.
  4. VistaPrint – Speaking of Business Cards, Postcards, and Flyers – VistaPrint.com is an incredible resource for stocking up on these crucial marketing materials at a fraction of the price.  By signing up for their Exclusive Offers emails (bottom right hand side of the page) you will receive all of their promotional emails – offering items such as 250 free business cards, 100 free post cards, 25 free brochures, and more!  Just be sure to not use the lia sophia logo or tag line without permission from corporate.
  5. Party Swapping - if you have a friend who sells another direct sales prodcut, consider Party Swapping – you agree to host a party for her, if she will host a party for you!  This is a great way to meet new customers who you might not otherwise meet!
  6. Hold An Open House - Looking for Hostesses?  Why not BE one!?  Hold your own Open House and invite literally EVERYONE who you have ever done business with, or would want to introduce your business to.  Offer incentives for Bookings and Sales!  You can even consider making it a “Mystery Hostess Open House”
  7. Social Media - The numbers for Social Media in 2011 are staggering – with nearly 600 MILLION users on Facebook alone.  Even if you are not very tech-savvy, you can begin building an online presence via Facebook, Twitter, LinkdIn, and – my absolute favorite – BLOGGING! With Search Engines all but eliminating phone books, it is crucial to have an Online Presence to keep up with today’s market.
  8. Gardening - Gardening is the term for Marketing your business.  Gardening is like “planting seeds” of success while out doing your normal daily routine.  Always keep a Show on the Go packet in your purse or car for when you are dropping your kiddos at school, at a restaurant, at the Grocery Store, at bank.  Truly ANYWHERE you go is an opportunity to “plant your seeds” with sharing the love of jewelry.
  9. Just Start TALKING! The “Gift of Gab” is a learned behavior – you are not born with it!   Talking, selling, prospecting – all of these skills are learned by repetition, consistency, and trial and error.   The more people you talk to about your business, the more Customers, Hostesses, and Team Members you will receive.  You can not sit at home and grow a million dollar business – not quickly anyway – so GET OUT AND START TALKING!

Encouraging hostesses to get more guests

Hostess coaching is key to guest turn-out.  The more guests arrive, the more sales, bookings, and recruiting opportunities you will have.  So, how do you encourage your hostess to have a good turn out?   We will be talking about Hostess Coaching at the next Team Meeting on August 15th.  In the mean time, here are a few tips you can start using right away.

  1. Gift them for 10 guests!  I always remind my hostess that with 10 orders and 2 bookings she'll be able to double her hostess credit, but I also add in that if she has 10+ adult guests at her party, I'll pay for one of her bonus items!  I explain that I'll give her an extra $15 in jewelry credit to cover the cost of her bonus item (costs the advior $4.50 to do this).
  2. Incentictize your guests to bring friends.  I am always willing to give a guest $5 off her order if she brings a friend that wasn't directly invited.  Have your hostess share this offer to her guests when she's calling to get RSVPs.
  3. It's always important to remind your hostesses to call their guests, but giving them an incentive to do so really helps!  So, the following is the STAR letter, a quick letter that you can mail to your hostess at the same time you sent out her postcards that really encourages her to call her guests.  Be sure to do your end and put stars on 4 of the postcards!

Big Purple Star
Dear _HOSTESS_,

I have a special challenge for you!  Here’s your chance to earn even more FREE jewelry!  I emailed your invitations on ____.  On 4 of the invitations I have indicated it was a STAR INVITATION!

Look for the 4 Stars and here’s what you’ll get if you find them:  $5 in free jewelry for finding one STAR, $10 in free jewelry for finding 2 STARS, $15 in free jewelry for finding 3 STARS, or a discontinued piece of jewelry from me if you find all 4 STARS!  You must have a $250 qualified show to get any of these benefits.

BE  A  STAR and find all of the stars!  Just call each and every person on your invite guest list.  While personally reminding them to come to your show, see if they have one of the lucky star invitations!  If they have a star they are also a winner!  They will receive $5 off their purchase if they attend the show.  Also, remind them to bring a guest so they can receive another $5 off!

Big Purple Star
I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!

I am also sending you some catalogs & outside order forms for you to use up to your show.  The special is buy 2 at regular price, get 1 at half off.  PLUS 3 more necklaces for ½ off!  This is a great program since the necklaces are usually your more expensive items, and it’s always the MOST EXPENSIVE that you get for ½ off!!!

Reach for your dreams…….we’ll have a fabulous shopping spree for you!  Looking forward to your show……..I’ll get in touch with you a day or two ahead of time to see how the “STAR SEARCH” went!

Sincerely,

Kiki Rogers

Hottest of the HOT!

Corporate has just issued the Hottest of the Hot list, which can be found at Advisor Advantage.  I STRONGLY encourage my team to check this out!  This gives you the top items that customers are buying, hostesses are choosing for bonus items, and Kiam items most purchased as well!

I understand that not everyone can purchase the entire line for shows.  I myself have just 100 items from our HUGE catalog.  But I've found that when I do purchase samples, if I buy items from the Hot lists my show totals increase and people fall in love with my selection because I HAVE WHAT THEY WANT!  Also, here's a HUGE tip... if an item is in the Hot list, it's very unlikely it will be retiring at next catalog change.  So, that's less pieces that you'll need to replace and you'll be having a greater selection out of the next catalog too!

So, check out the Hottest of the Hot list on the AA today!

lia sophia TV Show game

This is a simple game to play at your jewelry shows.  You read the following script, and the guests count how many TV show titles they hear.  I've used this to award the guest who gets closest to the exact number with a free gift or discount, and I've also used "last digit" as their thank you gift number.

Lia Sophia TV Game

I was sitting in my House feeling Lost and afraid of becoming one of those Desperate Housewives when I found lia sophia jewelry. With a Bold and Beautiful line influenced by some of today’s Young and Restless designers, I knew lia sophia was the Extreme Makeover I was looking for.
Now I’m more than a Survivor, I’m Dancing With the Stars when I see Eva Longoria, Kathryn Heigl and other famous Hollywood stars wearing lia sophia jewelry. You might think that only in Life on Mars could you take your wardrobe from Ugly Betty to America’s Next Top Model without spending a fortune, but since our catalog features over half of our items for $35 or less, and you too can Access Hollywood as a lia sophia customer.  And with the _current month_ Special, __explain current special __ ! How’s that to keep your finances out of Jeopardy?
Are you enjoying the Entertainment Tonight? Why not think about having your own lia sophia show. You’ll be calling all your Brothers and Sisters when you see how much free stuff you get. In fact, you’ll be counting the Days of Our Lives As The World Turns if you book a party tonight because you can get any item up to $100 for the number on your card!

Where to have a party?

Have you ever had a hostess tell you she'd love to have a party, but doesn't have the space at her home?  I know I've ran into the objection myself.  Obviously, she loves lia sophia jewelry, and she would really enjoy being a hostess, so you want to still be able to offer her the chance to do so without making her feel pressured that it has to be at her house.  The best solution is to offer her alternative locations.  So, here's some ideas like that to offer to your potential hostess:
  • Church  - I just did a show last night that the hostess used a room at her church and invited her church friends to attend.  Everyone knew the location well, so it was a fantastic turnout and the hostess walked away with almost $100 in free jewelry!

  • Party RoomRestaurants  - I hold my monthly meetings at Davannis because they have a party room that they don't charge at all and it holds up to 40 people!  They just ask that people purchase some pizza, which is a pretty inexpensive way to have a party if you ask me!  Many other restaurants in the twin cities have party rooms such as Axels, Crave, McCoy's, and many more.  Encourage your hostess to call her favorite restaurant and ask about semi-private seating.

  • Community Rooms & Libraries  - You'd be surprised how inexpensive a meeting room can be to rent at
your local library or community center.  Also, some city halls have private meeting rooms and little or no charge to residents.
  • Party at a Park!  - The summer time is a great time to gather under the pavilion and have a party!  This is also a fantastic option for families; the kids can play, the men and bar-b-que, and the ladies and bling out in the sun!
  • Camp Side - Lots of friends get the families together for a camping weekend.  Why not make a jewelry party out of it too!
  • Let's do it together!  Tell your hostess to pick a friend who has some nice digs and offer to come help clean and provide the food and you two can have two shows at once!  You can even offer both hostess a thank you gift, and if the show exceeds $500, split it into two shows so they each maximize their hostess credits!
If all else fails, remind the hostess that her friends will enjoy themselves, no one ever cares about things like the size of the room, or the state of the house. They just come to have fun, and they never care about the details. Let me worry about those you just relax and have fun with your friends!

Blog up & running

Hello Team!

I've been Facebooking, and I just started Tweeting, so why not bring this whole social networking full circle and begin a Blog for my lia sophia team too?  Actually, a blog has some great advantages for our team.  The top two is that I can provide materials to my newest of team members without needing to repeat myself to the entire group, and everything is categorized for quick re-access if you are looking for something I've shared in the past.  Also,  I can see what YOU are using the most and make improvements on the tools I provide to my team members.

Remember, this is YOUR business, but I am a business partner and want to see YOU succeed and reach YOUR goals!  So, hopefully we'll be able to use this blog best for YOUR needs.  Please provide feedback and suggestions as we go along!
